1978 Gibson G3 Bass, Natural

1978 Gibson G3 in fair condition, Natural finish over an Alder body. The bass has original parts except the hard case which is an early '70s Gibson case. Serial: 70188109. Weight: 9 lbs 14 oz. The finish has lots of wear and various suffs, nicks and dings. The finish has worn through in numerous places including the bottom edge and back of the body and the back of the neck. The frets are in good condition having been dressed in our workshop. Nut Width: 40.9mm. Depth: 21.4 mm. This bass has been fully set up with a fresh set of Rotosound nickel strings. It has a lovely smooth action and great tonal options.

It has an arrow-shaped headstock inspired by the flying V. Contoured body edge vaguely echoes the SG, its offset horns were clearly reminiscent of other popular makes, as was its bolt-on neck (4 bolt). The strings go through the body allowing for greater sustain and this bass definitely has that, along with a superb tone.

The G3 features three single-coil pickups wired in a humbucking configuration. The pickups were designed by Bill Lawrence. The pickup selector works as follows: Forward position activates the front and middle pickups in a humbucking configuration. The back position activates the middle and back pickup in the same manner. The middle position activates all three pickups for what Gibson coined a "buck-and-a-half".
