1977 Gibson G3 in excellent condition, Natural finish over an Alder body. All original, including the case. Serial: 73057091. Weight: 9 lbs 11 oz / 4.39 kg. Nut Width: 40.5 mm. Depth: 21.5 mm.
The body finish has a few small patches of wear, mainly along the bottom edge. The neck and fretboard are really clean, and the frets have plenty of life left in them. The headstock has some tiny scuffs along the top edge and some wear from a guitar stand or wall hanger. The truss rod works as it should. This bass has been fully set up in our workshop with low action and, I think, a set of D'Addario roundwound strings.
It has an arrow-shaped headstock inspired by the Flying V. The contoured body edge vaguely echoes the SG; its offset horns were clearly reminiscent of other popular makes, as was its bolt-on neck (4-bolt). The strings go through the body, allowing for greater sustain, and this bass definitely has that, along with a superb tone.
The G3 features three single-coil pickups wired in a humbucking configuration. The pickups were designed by Bill Lawrence. The pickup selector works as follows: Forward position activates the front and middle pickups in a humbucking configuration. The back position activates the middle and back pickups in the same manner. The middle position activates all three pickups for what Gibson coined a "buck-and-a-half".
