1961 Fender "Stack Knob" Jazz Bass, serial number: 63703. It has a superb refinish in Olympic White, done in 2012 by the wonderful Clive Brown. Those who are aware of his work will know how realistic his refinishes are. This one is no exception. As well as the refinish, we had both pickups expertly rewound by Lee Lavarack of Toltec Pickups in Leeds. Otherwise, all original, including the brown tolex case, the mutes and a very rare Fender brochure from 1960 that features "Fender's newest edition to the field of electric basses"
The bass features a slab rosewood fretboard with "clay" dots and a beautiful tortoiseshell guard that has no breaks or repairs and only very minimal shrinkage. (The guard came off and back on easily) It's a great player with a superb and even sound right across the fretboard. Weight: 9 lbs 4 oz / 4.19 kg. Nut width: 37.8 mm. Depth at 1st fret: 19 mm.
The body finish has lots of very fine lacquer checking as well as small dings and scuffs. (All done by Clive during the refinishing process) The neck finish has worn, leaving it very smooth in the hand. The headstock has a few tiny bumps and scrapes along the top edge. Everything remains structurally sound with no breaks or repairs, and all hardware and electronics are in good working order. The original frets are in excellent condition.
The pencil date on the end of the neck is 7/61. No body date is visible. The pots date to the 8th week of '61. Weight: 9 lbs / 4.08 kg. Nut width: 38.2 mm. Depth at 1st fret: 20 mm. This bass has been fully set up in our workshop with great action and a fresh set of La Bella nickel roundwound strings.
