1963 Gibson SG Special, Cherry

1963 Gibson SG Special, cherry. Overall this guitar is in very good condition but has had a minor repair done around one edge of the tenon joint at the heel. The neck had moved slightly along the seam on one side and around the back edge. ( It was a split along the seam not a crack in the wood itself) The guitar played well and stayed in tune as it was and only moved under pressure but I felt it was worth having my tech stabilize the joint with hide glue. It's a very clean job as you will see in the pictures labelled before & after. I have included pictures of the area in regular light and under blacklight. (all shots under blacklight are after the repair)

The guitar is otherwise original. These specials have hot, P-90 pickups, on a lightweight mahogany body. There is general play wear including a patch of wear along the bottom left edge and other small scuffs and dings in the finish to the body, neck and around the edges of the headstock. The frets are in good shape having been cleaned and dressed in our workshop and have plenty of life left in them.

Fully set up in our workshop with a fresh set of D'Addario Super light, 9 gauge strings. Serial number: 105047. Weight: 6 lbs 2 oz. Nut width of 43.4 mm/ depth at the 1st fret: 21.2 mm/ depth at 12th fret: 25mm.

The Gibson SG Special was introduced in 1961 as a "mid-level" guitar. This set-neck mahogany guitar was a step up from the SG Junior with a pair of P-90 pickups, three-way switching, individual volume and tone controls, and a bound neck with dot inlays.
